Relais de Margaux is aging. It should not be rated as a 4* but a 2 to3* hotel. The brasserie restaurant is ok for golfers to have a snack or a drink after a game of golf,it is not acceptable as a proper restaurant. The newer part of the hotel is dull and plain. We came over 12 years ago and found it pretty good at the time but now it seems to need better maintenance and renovation. The staff was pleasant.
Almost nothing. This is a terribly overpriced hotel which deserves (at most) 3-stars. It is old/rundown, lacks sufficient and/or attentive staff, is overrated, has an inconvenient location. I suppose if I have to find a positive it would be the golf course views. My wife and I agree that this is the worst and most overpriced hotel we have stayed in Europe during our frequent trips over the last 5 years. Travellers should be warned not to stay here. The 400 Euros ($600) per night included almost nothing and they then charged us an additional 42 Euros ($65) for a yourth hostel like Breakfast with bread and cheese (complete with flies). Terrible and uncomfortable bed with a can of bugspray (Raid) in the room. Absolutely awful room for the price. And that is the positive.
We are not terribly picky travelers - and we absolutely hated this hotel. It is an abomination for the price ($700 per night including breakfast) - and is the unfortunate combination of old/rundown, overated, terrible staff, inconvenient location - simply the worst and most overpriced hotel we have stayed at in Europe in the last 5 years. The room had a youth hostel type, feminine napkin mattress with thin, cheap blankets and uncomfortable pillows. The can of bug spray (raid) displayed prominently on our entrance was a nice touch. The location (billed as 800 m from Chateau Margaux) was classic marketing B.S. That distance was to the back wall of Margaux (with a distant view of the back of the chateau) - nothing within 2-3 km of hotel. I could go on and on. Simply terrible. Do not say you haven't been warned. This place is a complete rip-off.
Good facilities but very quiet -very few guests
Main restaurent remained closed during our stay and prices in golf bistro were too high--breakfast expensive with very slow service in this bistro
the surrounding of the hotel is beautiful. In the middle of wineries. Very quiet.
the service is very poor, especially in the Brasserie. We ordered food, had to wait an hour and in the end the desert didn't even come. The servant simple left, perhaps her shift was over? The breakfast is good and the servants there nice, but not very accurate. We asked for an egg and they simply forgot. We had to ask again. So overall the service can improved!
Quiet, beautiful castles near by, walks along river.
The room was big and with a lovely view to the golf cort.
Really quiet (ok, the off season) but the calm is medicinal. Room was very comfortable and although double bed was a 1+1 the matress/bedding was devine! Staff are relaxed (keeping with the theme) and helpful. Spa facilities are super but typically French, ie. Expensive and only open 0900-1800hrs (if you can get a package with spa inc. Its the only way to go!). Location, perfect for exploring the Medoc while Bordeaux still very accessible.
Decor in room was a bit dated (flowery bed throw matching the curtains!) and buffet breakfast nothing exceptional but I can count on one finger how many non 5-star hotels do a good brecky!
Great Golf, great Spa and Hotel amenities. Good food and very nice location. Very nice service and attention
Rooms a little sad and dark
Great location with high quality facilities. Golf course is very nice and good place to experience famous vinyard.
Environment and space. Also the facilities..BUT See below
The Hotel would not let any Children in the indoor pool under 16. This is rediculous!!
negative would be the lack of a place to just relax and have a drink or coffee. Ok while bar /grill was open but sometimes it was closed.
Rooms are quite spacious and very comfortable
Spa was average and the main dining restaurant was closed
Using the bikes to cycle round the villages. But why so expensive to hire?
Not very kid friendly. Had three teenagers with me, but their menus were very adult. Menu was limited and did not change. Very expensive food.
There was an extra charge for everything including internet usage! The restaurant which was open during our stay only offered a la carte dining and was quite expensive for a very informal setting.
